Angela Sandwith

Higher Education, Leeds and Sunderland

Taught Design in Secondary schools in the Sunderland area before working as an Advisory teacher and then a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Sunderland.

Angela led BA and PGCE programmes in Secondary Design and Technology, PGCE Art, PGCE Media and she was an Overseas education tutor. She left University in 2017 to focus on her art practice.
Her studio is a former granary and she also works from a 1970’s caravan which she converted using reclaimed and recycled materials.

Angela initially trained in Textiles, Fashion and Education then moved on to study Fine Art where she specialised in sculpture. She uses recycled, discarded and unusual materials as metaphors with a general focus on environmental issues.
Recent projects include Carbon-Borders-Voices a collaborative project which explores our relationship to nature and #SeeMe, increasing the visibility of children excluded from school. In 2023 she was commissioned to produce an installation for the UK’s biggest Light Festival, Lumiere Durham which gave her the opportunity to extend her practice to working in light.
