Nasim Akhtar
Photography, Mixed Media: textiles, acrylics, inks, watercolours
A love of colour and fabrics from being a child, always putting pieces of material together, led to her making quilts for family and friends for decades.
Over the last few years Nasim has integrated traditional styles and techniques from East and West with contemporary modern prints and colours to produce original works of art.
While working in Criminal Justice she captured the lives of those on the margins of society in poems, short stories and more recently dramas.
Being a member of Easington Writers’ group led to her editing her own manuscript about the first generation of South Asian men who migrated to the United Kingdom. Many underestimate the life opportunities afforded to their families by the sheer hard work, courage and resilience of this generation.
She moved from West Yorkshire to County Durham in 2019 and is inspired by the similarities in peoples’ live experiences. Nasim enjoys the rugged coastline, the beautiful countryside and is influenced by the rich heritage of the area.
