Everything we need

This photograph portrays a nettle growing on the cliff-tops above Seaham’s Blast Beach. The plant is back-lit by the sun rising above the sea and the light creates a bright outline around the nettle. Nettles are often despised as invasive weeds that sting, but they are precious plants that can be used as foodstuff, to create textiles, as dye and as fertiliser. They are precious too for insects. Nettles thrive in bright summer sunshine and this image suggests the dynamism of the relationship between the plant and the light which we all need to thrive.
