The Durham Lumiere Festival of Light is the UK’s largest light festival and has become a cultural sensation since its inception in 2009 when it attracted 75,000 visitors, with 160,000 visiting in 2023. It has attracted world-class light installation artists, lighting up the cathedral, castle and surrounding buildings each year. My painting shows the almost 900 year old cathedral in, literally, a new light, completely different to the traditional, historical perception that visitors have.
Palma Studios (UK)’s installation “In Our Hearts – Blind Hope” created a luminous cathedral with bright fluorescent lighting which is enough to make visitors see it anew and gasp at its beauty – it is a true northern star to be proud of.
